Wolverhampton's history can be traced back as far as 659 AD, when King Wulfhere of Mercia founded the abbey of St Mary in the town. In 1086, Wolverhampton was recorded in the Domesday Book as being a part of the county of Staffordshire.

With the development of the Staffordshire coal and ironstone deposits, Wolverhampton became known for its metal manufactures, especially from the late 18th century. A wide range of products is produced today, including paints and rubber tires, as well as the output of the metal foundries.

Wolverhampton is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands, England. Historically part of Staffordshire, the city is named after Wulfrun, who founded the town in 985, from the Anglo-Saxon Wulfrūnehēantūn ("Wulfrūn's high or principal enclosure or farm").

The present house was built at the end of the 15th century, and is the oldest building in Wolverhampton after St. Peter's Church." Wolverhampton was the first British town to introduce automated traffic lights in 1927 in Princes Square at the junction of Lichfield Street and Princess Street on a trial basis. Great Britain's first permanent automated traffic lights were opened on 16 March 1928 in Leeds.

The earliest known date of the existence of some form of market in Wolverhampton is 1179 and there is another reference in 1204 when King John took great exception to the existence of a market without a royal charter. It was on the fourth day of February 1258 that King Henry III granted a charter for a market.

The first representative for Wolverhampton was established due to the Reform Act in 1832. On March 15, 1848, it was infused as a part of a municipal borough. In 1889, it was transformed into County Borough.
