With a history dating back to 1270s, the Manor House Museum in Sandwell is one of the most important surviving medieval timber framed buildings in the Midlands. Sandwell Hall was a mansion house in the county of West Midlands (originally in Staffordshire), England, about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of West Bromwich. Between the last two censuses, the average (median) age of Sandwell increased by one year, from 36 to 37 years of age. Metalworking, especially nail making, in the area dates from the Middle Ages, and coal was mined in the 13th century. Sandwell’s main industrial growth, based on local coal and ironstone reserves, followed the coming of the canals in the 18th century.
