Cheshire is a gorgeous county in North West England. It borders Wales to the west, Greater Manchester to the north, Derbyshire to the east, and Staffordshire to the south. Technically, some refer to it as home to Manchester, though that is generally its own entity.

Chester is Cheshire’s county town, which is particularly well-known for having a rich history that tapers all the way back to the time of the Roman Empire! It is also famous for its stunning medieval city walls and unique black and white timber-framed buildings. Essentially, it’s a town you have to see at all costs!

If you like long walks, hiking, and stunning natural views, then few places are quite as well-recommended as the Peak District! It is a genuine area of natural beauty, and it lies within the eastern boundary of Cheshire. Millions visit the area to scale the peaks and to just get out and enjoy that fresh air occasionally.

Cheshire played a significant role in the Industrial Revolution. It was home to industries such as textiles, silk weaving, and coal mining. The people here definitely worked for their money – and it’s these physical efforts that have helped to keep the north of England afloat.

Back to the natural beauties found within Cheshire – have you ever been to Delamere Forest? It is a large woodland area popular for walking, cycling, and nature exploration. It offers trails, picnic spots, and a variety of wildlife. The perfect locale for a family day out, or just a wander alone in the woods!

The county is famous for the production of Cheshire cheese, salt and silk. The county has seen a number of inventions and firsts in its history. A mainly rural county, Cheshire has a high concentration of villages. Agriculture is generally based on the dairy trade, and cattle are the predominant livestock.

30-ton granite boulder in Macclesfield's West Park which is actually a glacial erratic, carried south from Cumbria by advancing glaciers around 12,500 years ago. The boulder was presented to the people of Macclesfield in their new public park in 1857, having been discovered during excavations nearby.

Cheshire's name was originally derived from an early name for Chester, and was first recorded as Legeceasterscir in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, meaning the shire of the city of legions. Although the name first appears in 980, it is thought that the county was created by Edward the Elder around 920

The Cheshire County flag design incorporates three golden wheatsheaves and a golden sword on blue. This is the banner of arms granted in 1938 to the former Cheshire County Council. The golden wheatsheaves on blue are a symbol linked since the late twelfth century to the earldom of Chester.

Daniel Craig. One of the British theatre's most famous faces, Daniel Craig, who waited tables in Cheshire as a struggling teenage actor with the National Youth Theatre, has gone on to star as James Bond in Casino Royale (2006), Quantum of Solace (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021).

Most of what is now the modern county of Cheshire formed part of the Welsh kingdom of Powys, ruled by the descendants of Cadell, while its north-eastern borders met with those of Elmet and the emerging Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Mercia.
