Blackpool Leasing Did You Know?Blackpool is the only British beach resort to boast three piers. Holding Grade II listed status, the North Pier was opened in 1863 and is the oldest remaining example of a pier designed by celebrated seaside architect Eugenius Birch. The name 'Blackpoole' first appears in the 1602 Bispham parish baptismal register. 'Foxhall' was the first house to be built in the area. Foxhall was built by Edward Tyldesley, the Squire of Myerscough, towards the end of the 1600's. A historic drainage channel running over a peat bog, which discharged discoloured water into the Irish Sea, gave Blackpool its name. This black pool of water was known as 'Le Pull' due to how the peat lands in which the stream ran through discoloured the water. ' Why is it called the Golden Mile? Blackpool The Golden Mile received its iconic nickname from the days when this area of the promenade was booming with amusement arcades, many of which are still open today. 'Doon the watter' So why is this English seaside resort so popular with Scots? Allan Brodie, an architectural historian for English Heritage and co-author of Blackpool's Seaside Heritage, traces the connection back to the 19th Century, which saw the start of the "Glasgow Fair Fortnight". The colour orange had been suggested by then director Albert Hargreaves (later club chairman) who was also an international referee. He had been refereeing an international game between Holland and Belgium when he recommended that the Dutch colours would suit Blackpool as being uniquely distinctive among English club colours In a blaze of publicity on 6th July, 1972, Blackpool Zoo was opened by Johnny Morris of TV 'Animal Magic' fame riding to the zoo on an elephant, accompanied by the Mayor in a Rolls-Royce. Blackpool Pleasure Beach, which opened in 1896, is no stranger to breaking records. When it opened in 1994, the Big One was the tallest and fastest roller coaster in the world. Sir Hiram Maxim's Captive Flying Machine, known as the Flying Machines, is the oldest amusement park ride in Europe, having opened in August 1904. As the ride rotates and picks up speed, the centrifugal force pushes each of the rockets outwards creating the ultimate flying experience. Flying Machines opened in 1896 Squires Gate, which became Blackpool International Airport, was one of the first aviation sites in the UK, with a history dating back to 1909. Just a few years after the first powered flight in the States, passengers were being flown over the Fylde coast.
