Blackburn Leasing Did You Know?Blackburn is an industrial town and the administrative centre of the Blackburn with Darwen borough in Lancashire, England. The town is north of the West Pennine Moors on the southern edge of the Ribble Valley, 8 mi east of Preston and 21 mi north-northwest of Manchester. Blackburn has been associated with many improvements in the manufacture of cotton, among which was the invention (1767) of the "spinning jenny" which was invented in nearby Oswaldtwistle by James Hargreaves, who died in 1770. There are several fine churches and public buildings. By the first half of the 18th century textile manufacture had become Blackburn's main industry. From the mid-18th to the early 20th century Blackburn evolved from a small market town into "the weaving capital of the world", and its population increased from less than 5,000 to over 130,000. Church Street is Blackburn's oldest street and takes its name from its original church, the Church of St Marie (St. Mary), which, like the street, can be traced back over 1000 years. Hidden at the back of Railway Road in Blackburn between the Adelphi pub and the Lancashire Telegraph lies the ancient ‘ All Hallows Spring’ which is believed to have been the site of a Roman Temple and was then a place of medieval ‘pilgrimage and healing’. Blackburn Rovers Football Club’s distinctive Blue and White quartered shirts are not a result of the town’s famous cotton checks but a result of the club was formed by a group of public schoolboys in 1875. Opera singer Kathleen Ferrier , brought up on Lynwood Road in Blackburn after her father William was appointed head teacher of St James Primary School, was described at the time of her death, from cancer aged 41 as “the second most famous woman in the world after the Queen”. Darwen Street is oldest place of settlement in town. Made a Conservation area in 1994 conservation it's Blackburn’s earliest historic centre and includes the course of a Roman road that historically ran north-wards between Manchester and Ribchester. The King's Head was oldest pub in Blackburn. On the corner of King Street and Freckleton Street, the historic grade two-listed building, built in 1765, was ravaged by fire in 2003 and is now offices.
