Being in existence for over fourteen centuries, the Worcester Cathedral is one of the oldest churches in the world and still continues its purpose of being a place for worship and prayers. Worcester was formerly one of Britain’s leading glove-making areas and some leather companies employed people living in surrounding villages who made fine gloves by hand in their cottages. How did Worcester get to be called "Wormtown"? The moniker was bestowed upon the city by L.B. Worm, a locally famous disc jockey who coined the name in the late 1970's when rock 'n' roll was in it's punk heyday of green hair and pierced body parts. The remains of a 4,000 years-old Bronze Age burial site have been incorporated in a car park at Perdiswell, Worcester, making it the first park-and-ride scheme in Britain to be part of the nation’s historical heritage. Berrow’s Worcester Journal is the World’s oldest surviving newspaper. It has been continually published each week for over 300 years. Most back copies are now kept bound in the City Library.
