Surrey
Did You Know?
Famous scenes from The Holiday, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Skyfall were filmed in Surrey. The fictional home of Harry Potter (Number 4, Privet Drive) is located in the county. Covering a quarter of the county, the rolling countryside of the Surrey Hills is one of Britain’s most beautiful landscapes. It was the second area to get special planning protection under the new Planning Act of 1958. The county is home to one of England’s largest vineyard, Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking, as well as a host of smaller vineyards. Many famous musicians call Surrey home, including Kenney Jones from the Who, Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen, while Freddie Mercury is buried in Woking’s Brookwood Cemetery. The original band members of Genesis all attended Charterhouse School in Godalming and guitar legend Eric Clapton, who was born in Ripley, now lives in Ewhurst. West Clandon is a village near Guildford, that is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The legend of the dragon of West Clandon is said to have once blocked the road there. A soldier, condemed for deserting the army, agreed to fight the dragon for clemency. Apparently after a fierce battle, he duly did rid the village of the dragon and then supposedly settled in the area. First written evidence of the story appeared in 1776. The area around the Devil’s Punchbowl, in south west Surrey, in the 1800s had a terrible reputation due to the activities of local highwaymen and robbers. They regularly robbed the stage coach as it travelled slowly up the hill on its way to Portsmouth on the main road, now known as the A3.
