Sunderland In the 1300s people began to build ships along the river bank. By 1835, the port of Sunderland was so important that its name was used when the three old villages became the a borough. Sunderland became a city in 1992. A person born in Sunderland is sometimes called a Mackem.

Sunderland is a city at the centre of the City of Sunderland metropolitan borough, in Tyne and Wear, 10 miles southeast of Newcastle upon Tyne and 12 miles northeast of Durham at the mouth of the River Wear

Over the centuries, the city grew as a port, trading coal and salt. Ships began to be built on the river in the 14th century. By the 19th century, the port of Sunderland had grown to absorb Bishopwearmouth and Monkwearmouth.

Sunderland has been rated as the best UK city to live and work in - based on factors including housing, travel, jobs and crime. The research, conducted by finance firm One Family, ranked cities based on aspects such as average salary, rent, property prices and commuting costs.

Argentinian legend Diego Maradona, one of the world’s greatest ever footballers, once dreamt of a move to Sunderland AFC, according to a documentary by the History Channel.

Each year on the last weekend in July, the city hosts the Sunderland International Airshow, which is the largest free air show in Europe.

Sunderland, historically a part of County Durham, there were three original settlements on the site of modern-day Sunderland. On the north side of the river, Monkwearmouth was settled in 674 when Benedict Biscop founded the Wearmouth-Jarrow monastery.
