Did You Know?Dunstable is a market town and civil parish in Bedfordshire. It lies on the eastward tail spurs of the Chiltern Hills. Shrewsbury is a historic medieval market town in Shropshire, England, located inside a loop of the River Severn. Famous as the birthplace of Charles Darwin, it boasts over 600 listed timber-framed buildings, a 10th-century castle, and a close proximity to the Welsh border that once made it a crucial military. It is most famous for the Shrewsbury Biscuit (or cake), a crisp, buttery biscuit dating back to the 16th century, often flavored with lemon, cinnamon, or caraway seeds. The town is also strongly associated with Simnel Cake, a light fruitcake with marzipan traditionally eaten during Lent and Easter. The correct pronunciation of the town's English name is subject to considerable debate, with some advocating "Shrooze-bury", and others preferring "Shroze-bury". A Latin name for the town, "Salopia", is also often used to refer to either Shrewsbury itself or Shropshire. The three leopard heads, known as the Loggerheads, have represented the town since 1425 and remain a proud emblem of Shrewsbury's civic identity. In 1403, a rebellion broke out in England that would culminate in one of the bloodiest battles to ever take place on English soil. On 21 July 1403, King Henry IV with his son Hal, the future Henry V, went head to head with a Northern traitor – Henry ‘Hotspur’. The Battle of Shrewsbury would pit rebel against royalist. It is a very old town, with origins dating back to at least the 5th or 6th century as the Welsh settlement of Pengwern. The Anglo-Saxons founded the town around the 8th century, with its first recorded charter in 901, and it was formally established as a town by the 10th century. He explained Mon and Monner are friendly greetings that could be traced back to the work of Shropshire priest-turned-poet John Audelay, who used the line "No mon this book he take away" in 1426. Mr Davies also said Owd Lad and Owd Nick originally referred to the devil, but are now used in the same way as Mon.
