Did You Know?Sheffield is a city in the English county of South Yorkshire. In the city centre, the Millennium Gallery shows metalwork and art from Sheffield and around the world. It adjoins the Winter Garden, a large temperate glasshouse filled with plants. Kelham Island Museum covers the city’s industrial heritage. The nearby countryside is part of Peak District National Park, characterised by moorland and rocky ridges. The Peak District was actually the first area in the UK to gain National Park status in 1951 and is spread across areas of Derbyshire, Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Yorkshire and Staffordshire. The city also has around 250 parks, woodland areas and gardens, including Crookes Park, Norfolk Heritage Park and the Botanical Gardens. Sheffield City Centre is home to the largest theatre complex outside London. The Sheffield Lyceum, Crucible Theatre and Studio Theatre. Pet names are a highly popular commodity in Sheffield. In Derby it’s typically ‘duck’, in Bristol it’s ‘my lovely’ and in Sheffield we like all sorts. You hear ‘darlin’, ‘duck’, ‘me laddo’, ‘sweet’eart’ ‘me cocker’ ‘duck’ and many more. In the years leading up to World War I, there was increasing demand for steel due to wartime arms production. However, erosion and rust on guns and rifles caused major problems. In 1915, a Sheffield man Harry Brearley, announced that he had invented a so-called "non-rusting" steel that did not stain however long it was used and whatever materials it came into contact with. It later became known as Stainless Stee What is Sheffield Most Famous For? Sheffield has gone from one of the industrial powerhouses of England to a rising star of the UK's arts and culture scene. Formerly famous for its stainless steel cutlery, the hollowed-out husks of its once mighty factories and foundries now contain galleries, theatres and museums. Sheffield has a Walk of Fame. It’s basically Hollywood Boulevard for Yorkshire. Located outside the Town Hall. The Great Sheffield Flood took place in 1864 when the Dale Dike Reservoir broke, causing massive damage and killing 244 people. The flood was caused by a crack in the reservoir which ultimately allowed nearly 3 million cubic metres of water into the city. Although the centre of the city escaped significant damage, certain areas such as the Wicker district were completely demolished The city is well known for its music scene, and has produced such acts as Pulp, Def Leppard, Bring Me The Horizon, Arctic Monkeys and The Human League. On July 4 1976, The Clash played their debut gig at Sheffield's Black Swan pub as an opening for The Sex Pistols. Although the gig was reportedly a disaster and the band waited another month before they had a live performance, the Black Swan will forever remain the band's first official set. Sheffield is home to the oldest football club in the world that plays association football – Sheffield F.C. was founded in 1857. The club has played at their grounds in Crosspool since its formation, earning the Sandygate Road pitch a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest ground in the world.
