The county of Oxfordshire are located in the South of England close to both London and the Midlands region.. The largest cities and towns in the area are Banbury, Bicester, Didcot and Henley-on-Thames. The county is famous for its association with the historic city and its most famous attraction, Oxford University. During the World War, Oxfordshire was spared from being bombed by Germany while other cities around the UK suffered. This was because Hitler intended to have Oxford as his national city once he had fully conquered Britain. Apart from the fact that the two institutions have a long standing academic rivalry, it’s interesting to note that Cambridge University was formed by scholars who escaped from Oxfordshire. This was during a time when the locals wanted to lynch all the students because some of them had beat up a local woman to death. Every member of Oxford University upon joining the University swears an oath stating that they will not light a fire inside the world famous Bodleian Library: ‘not to bring into the Library, or kindle therein, any fire or flame’. Today, this oath is still taken by all students. Alice in Wonderland is an exceptional story to read and was written by Lewis Carroll, a mathematics lecturer at Oxfordshire university. However, most people don’t know that the story’s main character was inspired by a real life person who was known as Alice Liddell. She was the daughter of the Dean of the college where Lewis taught. A bell located in a tower of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxfordshire goes by the name Old Tom. It strikes 101 times each night, once for each of 100 original scholars plus one added in 1663.
