Most towns come to being over the course of centuries but not Milton Keynes, which is now 51 years old. It took the name of the village of Milton Keynes, in Buckinghamshire, which was originally known as Middletone in the 11th century. In 1985 Milton Keynes became home to Britain’s first multiplex cinema with 10 Screens. Bletchley Park, the site of World War II Allied code-breaking and Colossus, the world's first programmable electronic digital computer, is a major component of MK's modern history. It is now a flourishing heritage attraction, receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. The ‘motorist’s friend’, WD40, is produced in Milton Keynes. Only six people know the recipe. Midsummer Boulevard is so called because the sun rises at its east end on the summer solstice. This was no accident; in the trippy early 70s, architects consulted Greenwich observatory to obtain the exact angle required at their latitude in Buckinghamshire and then persuaded engineers to shift the grid of roads a few degrees. Much of the Superman IV movie was filmed in Milton Keynes to portray New York. It was cheaper than filming in New York. In December 2011, over 60,000 people took to the streets to watch Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber drive their F1 cars on the boulevards in Central Milton Keynes Milton Keynes’ Tilbrook Industry estate is home to a plethora of companies selling coffee to keyboards – but it doesn’t get much more awesome than the Red Bull Formula One team. Incredibly, according to Destination Milton Keynes, the town has more bridges than Venice – a city built on water. What’s more, the size of its lakes means it’s got a longer coastline than Jersey. It also has more show homes than anywhere else in the UK. The Stables is MK's premier live music venue and was founded by the late Sir John Dankworth and his wife, Dame Cleo Laine in the grounds of their home at Wavendon. Olympic long jumper Greg Rutherford grew up in Milton Keynes and still lives in the town's Woburn Sands area. In 2014, a giant metal statue called the "Leaping Man" was erected in his honour near junction 13 of the M1 Motorway. Milton Keynes is home to four times Formula 1 Constructors Championship winners Red Bull Racing. The factory is situated in Tilbrook. One of the biggest misconceptions about Milton Keynes, which covers 119 square miles, is that it is a "concrete jungle". In fact, it is 40% green space and no-one in the town is ever more than half a mile from green space, according to the Parks Trust. |
