Did You Know?Mansfield is a market town in Nottinghamshire, England, the main town. Nestling in the Maun Valley surrounded by hills, it lies 12 miles north of Nottingham in a largely urban district, most of whose 106,556 population live in Mansfield. Settlement in the Mansfield area is known to date back to Roman times, with a villa discovered in 1787 by a Major Rooke between Woodhouse and Pleasley and a cache of denarii coins found near King's Mill in 1849. After the end of Roman occupation, the early English royalty are said to have stayed there, with the Mercian Kings having used it as a base for hunting in the nearby famous Sherwood Forest. There are remains of the 12th-century King John's Palace, in Clipstone, between Mansfield and Edwinstowe, in an area that was a retreat for royal families and dignitaries in the 14th and 15th centuries, for its location in Sherwood Forest and famed fresh air and exclusiveness. Mansfield is an historic market town and has one of the largest open-air markets in the U.K, dating to 1227 when a Charter was granted by King Henry III. A smaller nearby area called Buttercross Market in West Gate, the site of the original cattle market, has a centrepiece of local stone dating from the 16th century and is now heavily covered with stalls. Mansfield is the only place in the East Midlands to have a directly-elected Mayor - giving local people the chance to pick the person they want to lead their town At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, a Mansfield contestant, Rebecca Adlington, won two gold medals, for 400 and 800-metre freestyle swimming. After her record-breaking success, Adlington was welcomed home to Mansfield by thousands of people lining the streets to applaud as she passed in an open top bus. Mansfield was selected as the only place in Nottinghamshire and one of only three places in the East Midlands to receive the Queen's Jubilee Baton in 2002 as part of the build up to the Commonwealth Games and Jubilee celebrations. The name Mansfield arrived in England after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Mansfield family lived in the town, a parish in Nottinghamshire. The place-nameitself is a combination of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon terms, and literally signifies the field by the hill called Mam. Mansfield is Nottinghamshire’s largest Market Town located right on the edge of the beautiful countryside, perfect for relaxing walks and easy access to woodland areas of Sherwood Forest. Spend a few hours exploring Thieves Wood and Fountaindale, both located a few miles to the south of the town centre with close links to the Robin Hood legend.
