Did You Know?

Hertfordshire is one of the home counties located close to London in South East England, prominent towns in the area include Herford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead. Hertfordshire’s location makes it convenient to see both London and the South East region.

2011 was the 1000th anniversary of the first time that Hertfordshire is mentioned in writing.

George Bernard Shaw is said to have moved to the village of Ayot St Lawrence in Hertfordshire because, concerned about his health, he noted an epitaph on the grave of a 70 year old woman there saying ‘Her Time Was Short’? He arrived when he was 50, and his death at 94 was brought about by a fall while pruning a tree

Did you know that the first turnpike road in Britain was a section of the Great North Road (which much later evolved into the A1) north of Ware in Hertfordshire ?

At the 1948 Summer Olympics in London, marathon athletes left Wembley Stadium and raced through areas of Hertfordshire, including Radlett and Elstree, before returning to the stadium. It was a dramatic finish as the top three battled it out to come home within 42 seconds of one another.

Hertfordshire, though a small county, has little geographical unity. The southern parts are within the orbit of London and discharge commuters into Euston, St Pancras, King's Cross, and Liverpool Street. The north retains quiet spots like Gaddesden in the west and Wyddial in the east. The magnetic attraction of London has meant that, since Roman times, communications have run north–south, with Akeman Street, Watling Street, and Ermine Street as the main thoroughfare.

In the immediate pre-Roman period, Hertfordshire was part of the territory of the Catuvellauni, whose chief, Cassivellaunus, opposed Caesar's expeditions. His grandson Cunobelinus seems to have moved his capital from Verulamium, near St Albans, to Colchester, ruling over the Trinovantes. Caratacus, his son, led a protracted resistance to the Roman invasion of ad 43, was driven west, captured, and died a prisoner in Rome.

Apart from King Edgar’s donated land to Ely Abbey and Domesday Book record, Hatfield in Hertfordshire has been populated around for thousands of years. According to few historians, Hatfield was habituated with earliest settlers who introduced agriculture, defence, and war. The Domesday Book survey of 1086-87 only confirms the existence of Hatfield.

Brian Johnston, the famous BBC presenter and commentator, known the world over as 'The Voice of Cricket' was born in Hertfordshire.

Home to two ‘garden cities’, Welwyn and Letchworth, Hertfordshire nevertheless boasts a rich heritage. Visit the cathedral city of St Albans and explore not only the famous cathedral but also its beautiful medieval architecture and the city’s Roman past. The Roman theatre here at Veralumium is one of the finest examples in England.

The county's landmarks span many centuries, ranging from the Six Hills in the new town of Stevenage built by local inhabitants during the Roman period, to Leavesden Film Studios. The volume of intact medieval and Tudor buildings surpasses London, in places in well-preserved conservation areas, especially in St Albans which includes some remains of Verulamium, the town where in the 3rd century an early recorded British martyrdom took place.

There is evidence of humans living in Hertfordshire from the Mesolithic period. It was first farmed during the Neolithic period and permanent habitation appeared at the beginning of the Bronze Age. This was followed by tribes settling in the area during the Iron Age.

Britain's first paper mill was established in Hertfordshire in 1488.

The highest point in the county is 803 feet (245m) above sea level, near the village of Hastoe near Tring.

Ware is the starting point of the New River , a man made watercourse, opened in 1613, which supplies London with fresh water. Most of Hertfordshire's own supply of water comes from the chalk aquifer.
