Slingsby discovered Tewit Well, which is a chalybeate well (one containing iron). People believed that drinking water from such a well would heal sicknesses. So it began to grow into a spa town. Harrogate spa water contains iron, sulphur and common salt. The town became known as 'The English Spa' in the Georgian era after its waters were discovered in the 16th century.
