NASA’s space shuttle has only ever had one report of theft. That was in 1983 whilst on display atop a Boeing 747 at Stansted Airport Essex. Then there is the market towns, villages and hamlets used to film the Lovejoy TV series in the 1980s and Danbury Common being home to the country's largest adder population. The very first capital city in Britain was Colchester in Essex and this town is also regarded as the oldest recorded town in Britain. The oldest timber-framed barn in the world is at Cressing Temple near Braintree, Essex. The huge Barley Barn was built by the Knights Templar. Stow Maries Aerodrome is the last surviving First World War airfield and was originally created to combat German Zeppelin raids and bombing attacks from its Gotha aircraft. The mystery of Thomas Richman’s buried treasure has gone unsolved since 1780. It is suppose to be buried somewhere in Essex Were you aware that some historians claim that Robert the Bruce was a man of Essex? Many believe that the great Scottish hero was actually born at Montpelier’s Farm in Writtle near Chelmsford in 1274. Were you aware that the Saffron Walden turf maze is the largest of its kind in the world and is one of just eight surviving turf mazes in England? Turf mazes were once quite a common sight in Europe and at least 60 others were known to exist. Essex Southend Pier, at 1.33 miles long, is the longest pleasure pier in the world. Tiptree is one of the few places in the world where the ‘Little Scarlet’ strawberry can be found. It is grown at the Wilkin and Sons farm and used fresh from the fields in their famous jam. Chelmsford in Essex was once the capital of England for a few days when the seat of Government was temporarily moved to the town 600 years ago. The largest free air show in the whole of Europe is hosted in Southend. Did you know that St Botolph’s Church in Hadstock has the oldest door in England? It’s about 1000 years old! Set in a typical Saxon arch the door is of plain planking with iron hinges. Borley Rectory in Essex is widely proclaimed the ‘Most Haunted House in England. Did you know that the oldest wooden church in the world is St Andrew’s at Greensted-Juxta-Ongar, near Chipping Ongar? Its nave has split-log walls which are at least 900 years old, and possibly more. It is reported that there are more speed cameras per mile in Essex than in anywhere else in the world. The famous Clinton Cards shop was founded in Loughton Essex.
