Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium has one of the largest sliding roofs in the world. It can seat 74,000 and has hosted the Rolling Stones and Neil Diamond, as well as rugby and football matches and other sporting events. There are three castles still standing in Cardiff; Cardiff Castle that was built in the 12th century, St Fagan’s Castle, built in the 16th century and Castell Coch Castle built in the 11th century It may shock you to learn that Cardiff has more hours of sunlight than Milan in Italy. St David’s Centre is one of the largest shopping centres in the UK. The first ever British news film was filmed in Cardiff in 1896 when the Prince & Princess of Wales opened an extension to the Central Library. This was also the first ever motion picture of the prince. Roald Dahl, born and raised in Cardiff, once put a dead mouse into a jar of sweets at his local sweet shop after the owner was cruel to him. We all know that the leek is somewhat of a national treasure in Wales, but why? Well, legend has it that St David advised Britons to wear these in their caps during the battle to differentiate friend from foe; this resulted in a great victory. Ever since the vegetable has been a Welsh icon and particularly popular on St David’s Day. Guglielmo Marconi successfully transmitted the world’s first radio signals across water between Flat Holm and Lavernock near Cardiff in 1897. The city has the oldest record store in the world. Spiller’s dates back to 1894 and it used to sell wax records for the newly invented phonograph! Cardiff is also known as the City of Arcades. It has the biggest concentration of Victorian, Edwardian and modern-day indoor shopping arcades in Britain. The Wales Millennium Centre has won the Loo of the Year Awards twice. Who knew you could visit an award-winning toilet?! Held since 1963, the Britain in Bloom campaign was created to encourage greater horticultural in the UK. Cardiff has won the campaign’s award for “Large City” twice, in 1988 and 2005.
