The 328i, with its four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, is reasonably rapid, but the 335i, which has a six-cylinder 3.0-litre turbo, is phenomenally fast. Our favourites, though, are the diesels. The 320d’s 2.0-litre turbodiesel is properly quick and effortlessly flexible, and running costs are equally impressive. They’re even better if you go for the EfficientDynamics version, which is a fraction less flexible than the regular 320d, but still superb.
SE looks like the best package of equipment, but above that, buyers can personalise their cars with the Sport, M Sport, Modern and Luxury trims.
We’d strongly advise anyone buying a 3 Series to add the optional Adaptive M Sport Suspension. With it, the 3 Series is the best-driving car in the class bar none. Without it, the car’s dynamics are a little disappointing. We’d also add the silky-smooth eight-speed automatic gearbox.
